Extreme circumstances being faced by many in the community as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic have prompted an holistic response by the City of Gosnells, which has adopted a range of measures to support its community during this uncertain time.

At its meeting on Tuesday 31 March, Council approved development of the 2020/21 Budget on the basis that rate revenue would not increase.

In addition, Mayor David Goode said a range of new support measures were approved, aimed at easing pressure on households and local businesses.

“Apart from freezing rate increases, the City will write off penalty interest on overdue rates, as well as any dishonour fees incurred if a ratepayer defaults on direct debit payments. This is expected to reduce City income by around $150,000,” Mayor Goode said.

“About $200,000 worth of food business registration fees will also be waived – these renewals were due to be sent out this month and usually cover the cost of inspections of food premises, which are among those businesses hardest hit by this crisis.

“Commercial lease fees, worth $8,250 in revenue a month, will also be waived during the COVID-19 crisis, providing financial relief for three cafés and a child care centre that lease the City’s four commercial premises.”

Mayor Goode said the City’s strong financial position made it possible to provide this level of community support during the global health crisis.

“There are many factors beyond our control with the Coronavirus pandemic, so we’ve focused on the steps we can take to keep our community moving forward together,” he said.

The City is also developing a local economic stimulus program to help ratepayers and businesses, with details of this package still to be finalised, and a number of capital projects will be brought forward to create work for local businesses.

Fees and charges imposed by the City in 2020/21 will generally remain at 2019 levels and will be decreased where appropriate and when opportunities arise.
