City to shine a light for road safety

The City of Gosnells Civic Centre will take on a yellow glow to mark National Road Safety Week 2020 and promote road safety awareness to the community.

From Sunday 15 to Sunday 22 November, the Safer Driving Gosnells initiative will highlight the importance of road safety by lighting up the Civic Centre facade.

Mayor David Goode said the City was also seeking 500 local motorists to make the pledge to drive as if their loved ones were on the road ahead.

“We want our community to join more than 24,000 people nationally in making this pledge. We want our community to sign up and encourage their families, neighbours and work colleagues to sign up to the pledge,” he said.

“When drivers see the yellow light shining on the City’s Civic Centre, we want it to send a powerful reminder to think about driving to make the roads safe for everyone.

“Road deaths are preventable if we choose to drive so others survive – that means no distractions, not driving tired or under the influence of drugs or alcohol and protecting vulnerable road users.”

National Road Safety Week is an annual initiative from the Safer Australian Roads and Highways (SARAH) Group, partnering road safety organisations and Government. The week highlights the impact of road trauma and promotes safer driving.  

“This event is an important reminder to be safe while behind the wheel, and be mindful of pedestrians, cyclists and other road users, such as road service workers and emergency services personnel,” Mayor Goode added.

“It’s also a timely reminder, as we approach the festive season and summer holidays.”

Every year, about 1,200 people are killed and another 44,000 seriously injured on Australian roads, with traffic injury the biggest killer of Australian children under 15 years and the second-biggest killer of all Australians aged 15 to 24.

The Safer Driver Gosnells initiative received funding from the Road Safety Commission, the Road Trauma Trust Account and the State Government.
