The City of Gosnells is looking to a greener future, after adopting its first Emissions Reduction Strategy (ERS).

Mayor Terresa Lynes said the ERS showed the City successfully reduced carbon emissions from 6,210 tonnes in 2020/21 to 5,586 tonnes in 2021/22 and 4,500 tonnes in 2022/23.

“The City has already enjoyed considerable success reducing carbon emissions by 27 per cent over the past three years, which is a fantastic result,” she said.

“The new Emissions Reduction Strategy, combined with the City’s Sustainability Action Plan that was adopted last year, will build on this success to provide a cleaner and brighter future for our whole community.”

The ERS takes a deep dive into the City’s emissions profile and provides 16 recommendations to reduce emissions.

These recommendations include heating the pool at Leisure World using solar power instead of gas and transitioning the City’s fleet of utes and trucks to hybrid and electric-powered vehicles.

“The changes proposed in the City’s first ERS would further reduce the City’s carbon emissions by more than 30 per cent and save money in the long term,” Mayor Lynes said.

“The costs of fossil fuels will only increase and so it makes financial sense, as well as environmental sense, to go about the City’s business in a more sustainable way.”
