Attention young musos – entries are now open for the City of Gosnells 2025 Underground Sounds competition, presented by the team behind Gozzy Rock.
This year, the City’s annual music competition is supported by the neighbouring Cities of Armadale and Canning, the Town of Victoria Park and the Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale - opening entries to young performers aged 12 to 25 who live or work in any of these local government areas.
City of Gosnells Mayor Terresa Lynes said the event is a proven launching pad for young artists.
“The Underground Sounds competition has long provided a platform for budding performers to showcase their talents to a live audience,” Mayor Terresa Lynes said.
“It’s a great opportunity for young musicians to gain experience and pursue their passion.”
Mayor Lynes said thanks to the support of neighbouring local governments, the 2025 prize pool has grown to $5000.
“We have been incredibly impressed by the talent in past years. Expanding the competition means we’re set to discover even more emerging artists”.
City of Armadale Mayor Ruth Butterfield said it was important to provide opportunities for young musicians to perform to large audiences, learn from other musicians and share their talents with the community.
“The City of Armadale and surrounding areas are home to many talented young musicians, and events like this are a great way to nurture this talent,” she said.
“We’re excited to support the event and encourage our young musicians to enter and we are happy we can contribute to raise the prize pool for 2025.”
City of Canning Mayor Patrick Hall said partnering with neighbouring councils to support Underground Sounds reflected a shared commitment to investing in young people.
"It’s exciting to see local governments come together to create more opportunities for emerging talent," he said.
Town of Victoria Park Mayor Karen Vernon said the Town of Vic Park proudly supported local musicians, both through funding programs and at signature events, such as the famous Summer Street Party.
“We’re excited to expand the opportunities for residents in our Town to showcase their talents this year through the Underground Sounds competition, and to be doing this as part of a great collaboration with our neighbouring local councils,” she said.
Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale President Rob Coales said that, as the fastest growing local government in Western Australia, Serpentine Jarrahdale had a massive focus on local young people and was committed to creating pathways for them to thrive.
“Underground Sounds is a fantastic opportunity for young musicians in the Shire to be part of something bigger, and to gain real performance experience. We’re so proud to be part of an event that nurtures local talent, builds confidence and helps the next generation pursue their passion for music,” he said.
Performers can submit their entries online. Finalists will be invited to perform live at the finals event at The Underground youth centre in Southern River on Saturday 6 December.
