The City of Gosnells’ much-loved Mary Carroll Park has been named Park of the Year!

Mary Carroll Park took out first place at the Parks and Leisure Australia Western Australia Awards 2026.

City of Gosnells Mayor Terresa Lynes said the Park of the Year award recognised the City’s transformation of a treasured but underutilised wetland precinct into a culturally and ecologically rich destination for people of all ages and abilities.

“Mary Carroll Park wetlands are a stunning green and blue jewel within the City,” Mayor Lynes said.

“This award highlights highlights the City’s successful integration of Noongar cultural knowledge, seasonal wetland processes and Mary Carroll’s legacy of outdoor education to transform the park into a unique community asset.”

The Mary Carroll Park upgrade includes a Changing Places accessible toilet facility, an intergenerational inclusive play space, recreational parkland, pedestrian bridges and a lookout fostering community connection, ecological education and nature play.

The Mary Carroll Park All Abilities All Ages Playspace also won the award for best Playspace over $1million at the Parks & Leisure Australia Western Australia awards, Mayor Lynes said.

“Visitors to the Mary Carroll Park All Abilities All Ages Playspace enter a landscape alive with water, wildlife and Noongar stories,” Mayor Lynes said.

“The immersive nature-based play space and iconic giant gilgie emerging from the wetland have proven extremely popular with local children and families.

“The space is fully accessible, inclusive and has been designed for people of all generations and cultures to wander, discover and belong.”

The broader upgrade also included streetscape improvements, universally accessible pathways, public toilets, upgraded car parking, lighting and sensitive landscape enhancements.

Mary Carroll Park will now be considered for the Parks and Leisure Australia National Awards, which will be held in December.

The City also received a commendation in the Innovation in Parks, Sport and Recreation category for its project, Where should all the trees go?

In addition, Technical Officer – Parks Assets, Jayde Cameron received a commendation in the David Aldous Emerging Leader Award category.
