Three more people have been fined for illegally dumping rubbish, after being caught on covert CCTV cameras operated by the City of Gosnells.

The City continues to take a tough stance on illegal dumping, deploying hidden cameras at known dumping hotspots.

The offenders pleaded guilty in the Armadale Magistrate’s Court on 31 July and were fined the following:
• A Brabham resident was fined $500 plus court costs of $550
• A Cannington resident was also fined $500 plus court costs of $550
• A Kenwick resident was fined $650 plus court costs of $550

The three were recorded dumping household rubbish at Brook Road in Kenwick.

These convictions bring the total number of successfully prosecutions by the City of Gosnells to nine, with one more case pending and four additional incidents currently under investigation.

City of Gosnells Deputy Mayor Serena Williamson said the covert CCTV cameras had been highly effective in identifying illegal dumping offenders.

“It costs the City about $250,000 every year to clear away illegally-dumped rubbish from public land, funds which could be much better spent on services and programs for our community,” she said.

“We make no apologies for targeting illegal dumping. It’s unsightly, unsafe, harmful to the environment and a financial burden on our community.

“Illegal dumping is a problem for communities across Australia, not just in the City of Gosnells. There are plenty of easy ways to reduce your waste and dispose of it legally and safely, wherever you live.”

Commonly dumped items include kitchen waste, nappies, household goods, furniture, electrical items, packaging and more.

The penalty for individuals dumping rubbish is up to $5,000 and for businesses or corporate entities it is up to $10,000.

If you see dumped rubbish or someone dumping rubbish, take note of any vehicle registration, vehicle type and a description of the person, and report it to the City by calling 9397 3000.

If it is safe to take photographs, or you have dashcam footage, these can also be provided to the City.
