More illegal dumpers prosecuted thanks to City’s covert cameras

The City of Gosnells’ covert CCTV cameras have continued capturing illegal dumpers in the act, with three more offenders prosecuted in court this month. 

Johanna Louise from Forrestfield, Jashanpreet Singh from Ellenbrook  and Jagroop Bhatti from Cannington appeared in Armadale Magistrates Court on Thursday, June 12, where they pleaded guilty to littering offences after they were caught illegally dumping rubbish at a site along Brook Road in Kenwick. 

They were each ordered to pay fines between $600 and $1000, along with an additional $574 each to cover the City’s legal costs. 

“Just because you don’t live within the City of Gosnells, it doesn’t mean you won’t get caught,” Mayor Terresa Lynes said.

“We want to continue driving home the message that illegal dumping will not be tolerated in our City, and anyone who tries their luck will likely be caught and face the consequences.”

The penalty for individuals dumping rubbish is up to $5,000 and for businesses or corporate entities it is up to $10,000. 

“So far, six offenders have been prosecuted after being caught in the act of illegal dumping on City-managed land,” Mayor Lynes said. 

“We still have a further 16 offenders under investigation, and we are determined to make sure that people who do the wrong thing are made accountable for their actions.”

Mayor Lynes added that there are lawful ways to dispose of waste. 

“There are ways for residents in the City of Gosnells to dispose of their household waste legally, with the City providing free verge collections each year in addition to a community waste drop off day,” Mayor Lynes said.

“There are also tip sites located close by in the neighbouring Cities of Armadale and Canning, so there is no excuse for illegal dumping.”

If you see dumped rubbish or someone dumping rubbish, take note of any vehicle registration, vehicle type and a description of the person, and report it to the City by calling 9397 3000. 

If it is safe to take photographs, or you have dashcam footage, these can also be provided to the City.
