Volunteer drivers are needed to help transport local seniors to and from the Addie Mills Centre in Gosnells.
City of Gosnells Mayor Terresa Lynes said the programs, activities and events for residents aged 55 and over at Addie Mills were very popular.
“The City’s Seniors programs provide an essential service that allows our residents to remain active and engaged in the community, while making valuable friendships, as they age,” she said.
“Our volunteer bus drivers are an essential part of the City’s Seniors programs because they allow people who no longer drive to access activities and events at the Addie Mills Centre.”
Volunteer Driver Stan Smith has volunteered for the Addie Mills Centre for 22 years and has many entertaining stories to tell about his experiences. “I feel good about helping others, I just like doing it,” he said.
“Those that care are cared for, so one day it might be my turn to sit in the bus as a passenger and I will be able to enjoy what I’ve done to help others.
“I have thoroughly enjoyed my whole time and the camaraderie here, I haven’t regretted any of it.”
Julie Sanders volunteers two mornings a week as a bus assistant, where she supports the drivers and helps residents on and off the bus. She took on the role last year after retiring.
“I just really enjoy the interaction with the folk, they’re so much fun and they have a very relaxed attitude,” she said.
“The drivers are also a lot of fun and I have become firm friends with them.”
The Addie Mills Centre operates Monday to Friday.
Volunteer bus drivers require a minimum MR class licence. In return, volunteer drivers receive discounts at Don Russell Performing Arts Centre and Leisure World, and access to the Centre’s programs and services.
