Sparrows of Kabul exclusive performance at DRPAC

Hear one man’s account of Australia’s role in the Afghanistan conflict in an unforgettable performance of Sparrows of Kabul, at the City of Gosnells Don Russell Performing Arts Centre on Friday 23 June.

This is the only metropolitan performance of this enlightening and moving stage show by Fred Smith, who was the first Australian diplomat to be sent to work alongside Australian soldiers in Uruzgan Province in 2009, and among the last to leave in 2013.

Sparrows of Kabul combines songs, storytelling and evocative imagery, inspired by his time in Afghanistan – including some songs written while he was there among Australian, US and Dutch soldiers and Afghan interpreters.

City of Gosnells Deputy Mayor Adam Hort said the show would be an unforgettable event for those with an interest in the Australian war experience or in modern history.

“The City is honoured to be able to present Sparrows of Kabul to a Perth audience,” Mayor Lynes said.

“Many music fans may already be familiar with Fred Smith’s songs, which have been broadcast by the ABC and local radio.

“The show offers a unique, firsthand account of the gruelling experiences of many Australians involved in our longest war.”

Mr Smith said his experiences working with soldiers to evacuate terrified people from Kabul would stay with him forever. “Seeing the desperation with my own eyes struck me to the core,” he said.

“Despite the many challenges during evacuation mission, the Australian team managed to get 4,100 people out, most of whom are now living in Australia. Their girls and boys are going to school and having swimming lessons. We’ve changed their lives – this is a story worth telling.”
