Theatregoers who appreciate bogan humour will get a kick out of the local satirical retelling of William Shakespeare’s classic, Romeo & Juliet, which is heading to the Don Russell Performing Arts Centre this July.
Presented by the award-winning team behind Bogan Shakespeare, this hour-long comedy-fuelled stage production puts an ‘Aussie spin’ on Shakespeare’s most iconic love story.
Described by creators as “Shakespeare but funny”, this local stage production is set in Ellenbrook and centres on two families who are at odds over their AFL loyalties – one family barracks for the Eagles, while the others are diehard Dockers fans.
Following on from the success of other productions including Hamlet, Macbeth and King Lear, Romeo & Juliet marks the latest Shakespearean adaptation in the WA theatre group’s repertoire which creator, writer and performer Dean Lovatt is hopeful local theatregoers will love.
“It’s about a couple of young West Aussies getting in over their heads, letting their hearts think first…and lots and lots of flannelette shirts,” he said.
“On top of that we cram in as many local references as we possibly can.
“We love doing this show and we hope our new audiences will love watching it.”
Mayor Terresa Lynes said it was always great to see new shows on the DRPAC stage.
“I’m confident local people will embrace this opportunity to experience Shakespeare with a twist,” she said.
Bogan Shakespeare’s WA tour of Romeo & Juliet is brought to audiences by CircuitWest’s Shows on the Go program, which is funded by the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries (DLGSC).
Tickets start from $30 and are available through the DRPAC Box Office or via clicking here.
