All election candidates are responsible for ensuring their election signs are located in appropriate locations. The City often receives complaints from the community at election time regarding issues such as the number of signs installed, the location being too close to main intersections, signs installed on private property without the land owner's consent and signs obstructing public land.

What is an election sign?
“Election sign” means a bill, poster, placard or advertisement relating to any election, attached to or pasted, painted, or stencilled, on any hoarding, wall, building, or structure whether erected upon private property or upon a public place.
Election Signs in Public Places (verge, street, public thoroughfare)
The City will permit signs of up to 0.75m2 in area to be erected in public places subject to those signs not being located:
- On a footpath
- Over any footpath where the resulting vertical clearance between the sign and the footpath is less than 2.7m;
- On or within 1m of a carriageway (includes roundabouts and median strips);
- In any other location where the sign is likely to obstruct lines of sight along a thoroughfare or cause danger to any person using the thoroughfare; or
- On any natural feature, including a rock or tree on a thoroughfare, or on any bridge or the structural approaches to a bridge.
The sign should be:
- Securely installed, freestanding and not affixed to any existing sign, post, power
- Erected at least 50m from any intersection
- Removed within 7 days after the election day
The sign should not:
- Exceed 1m in height
- Be located on local government property (parks, reserves, buildings) without a permit
- Be illuminated
- Incorporate reflective or fluorescent materials
Election Signs on Private or Third Party Property
An election sign can be installed on private property (not local government property).
Signs on private property should:
- Be no greater than 1.2m2 in area.
- Only be installed with the landowner’s consent.
- Not erected or in place for more than 28 days before or more than 7 days after the relevant election day.
