Jane Meleisea has taken out the top prize at the City of Gosnells Community Art Exhibition and Awards, winning the $5,000 Overall Acquisitive Award.
Her acrylic artwork, titled Centre Stage, was recognised for its artistic strength and powerful connection to Western Australia’s environmental identity and natural heritage.
Mayor Terresa Lynes encouraged community members to visit the exhibition and see the winning artworks in person.
“Congratulations to all our winners in the City of Gosnells Community Art Exhibition and Awards, particularly Jane Meleisea for her outstanding artwork,” she said.
“Jane’s artwork is compelling and reflects on the fragility and significance of black cockatoos. It will provide lasting cultural value to the City’s art collection.
“The quality and diversity of art in this exhibition continues to amaze us each year, representing the depth and breadth of artistic talent in our community and beyond.”
Other category winners each took home a $500 prize, including:
• Oil – Chantalle Grummet, for The Ultimate Power Bunny
• Acrylic – Geoffrey Richard Reeves, for White Gum
• Pastel, Pencil, Pen and Watercolour – Linda Glover, for Faithful Friend
• Photography and Digital Media – Tania Rutley, for First Sight of Gold
• Mixed Media and Three-Dimensional sculpture – David Jay Reed, for Enemy of the State
• Youth Award (12 to 17 years) – Miriam Sekendy, for Partial Presence
• The City in Focus – Christine Douglas, for Royal Icons
• Local Artist – Geraldine Gustavino, for Crowned Elegance
• Aboriginal Artist – Ethyn Amat, for Vigorous Frenzy
Two artworks were also highly commended:
• Oil – Zainub Khan, for On the Horizon
• Photography and Digital Media – Christine King, for Bee Happy
Mayor Lynes encouraged community members to visit the exhibition and vote for their favourite piece in the People’s Choice Award.
Most artworks submitted to the exhibition are also available for sale, giving visitors the opportunity to purchase a unique piece to enjoy at home.
The exhibition runs from Saturday 16 May to Sunday 24 May at Lyal Richardson Hall, The Agonis building, in Gosnells. Opening hours are Monday to Friday from 10am – 4pm and weekends from 9am – 1pm.
Lyal Richardson Hall will also host a free Meet the Artist networking event from 6pm to8pm on Wednesday 20 May, as well as free Disability in the Arts Disadvantage in the Arts Australia (DADAA) Access ‘Tactile Touch’ tours on Friday 22 May from 10.15am to 11.15am and 11.30am to 12.30pm.
