Anzac Day commemorations will be extended to a week of community events in the City of Gosnells.

Mayor Terresa Lynes said the City’s decision to host extra events in the lead up to Anzac Day had the support of the Returned and Services League (RSL).

“Expanding Anzac commemorations beyond the traditional dawn service, which has been led by the Gosnells sub-branch of the RSL and supported by the City, aims to deepen community understanding of Anzac Day,” Mayor Lynes said.

“It will honour the legacy of Australian and New Zealand service personnel, increasing civic engagement through an accessible and meaningful program of events and activities.”

Proposed commemorative activities include a stage production of 21 Hearts about Vivian Bullwinkel, the sole survivor of the Banka Island massacre during World War II, as well as a screening of the film Gallipoli, to engage younger community members.

Additional proposed commemorations also include a talk from distinguished military historian and local author Neville Browning, about personal stories of soldiers from the region and historical insights, as well as a community concert.

“These activities provide an opportunity for the City to lead a community-wide recognition of the ANZAC spirit, ensuring that the stories of bravery, sacrifice and service are preserved and widely promoted,” Mayor Lynes said.

“While the dawn service will remain a cornerstone of Anzac Day activities, extended educational programming will broaden community participation and awareness, foster reflection and ensure the Anzac legacy is appreciated by all generations.”

In addition to the expanded events program, the City of Gosnells will look at opportunities to expand the war memorial in the Civic Centre gardens to better reflect all wars and conflicts in which Australia has been involved.

Details on Anzac Day commemorations will be announced via the City’s website and social media channels as they approach.
