When the Gosnells RSL hosts its annual Anzac Day Dawn Service this Saturday, it will do so in a newly named park – while remaining at its traditional location.
Part of the City of Gosnells Civic Centre Gardens surrounding the Gosnells War Memorial has been officially named Anzac Gardens, recognising the legacy of the Anzac spirit.
Mayor Terresa Lynes said Anzac Gardens is a special place for the community to gather, reflect and remember.
“This new name is a small but significant and lasting change that will strengthen recognition and honour the legacy of the Anzacs,” she said.
“The Anzac spirit reflects values we continue to uphold today – mateship, service, hard work and an underlying sense of humour. At the City of Gosnells, we are committed to ensuring the sacrifice and service of the Anzacs are remembered for generations to come.
The official name change was supported by Minister for Veterans’ Affairs and Member for Burt Matt Keogh.
“The word Anzac is held in the highest regard, it is not used lightly, it’s appropriateness is protected in legislation,” he said.
“I’m proud that this special place now carries this special name, in tribute to all those who have served from this community, and those who have lost their lives, their names permanently etched on the Gosnells cenotaph.”
In addition to naming part of the reserve Anzac Gardens and supporting the RSL to host its annual march, Dawn Service and Gunfire Breakfast, the City of Gosnells expanded its Anzac Day commemorations this year with a three-day program of events designed to engage people of all ages.
Events include the acclaimed stage production 21 Hearts: Vivian Bullwinkel and the Nurses of Vyner Brooke, a talk by local historian Neville Browning, a screening of the film Gallipoli, a special Art With a Glass session, and a performance by Fred Smith singing Unforgotten: Songs of Australians at War.
