The captivating story of Australian tennis great John Newcombe will come to life on stage at Don Russell Performing Arts Centre (DRPAC) on Friday 24 July.
NEWK: The John Newcombe Story traces the life of the 1960s and 70s tennis champion, portraying a highly determined and ambitious man navigating a rapidly changing world.
Written by award-winning Australian playwright Kieran Carroll and performed by acclaimed Melbourne actor Paul Armstrong, the story begins in 2024 at Newk’s 80th birthday in Sydney.
John Newcombe’s journey takes us from a naïve schoolboy in the 1960s to becoming the world’s number one men’s tennis player in the 1970s.
City of Gosnells Mayor Terresa Lynes said the comedy-drama also captured the humour of Newcombe’s television commercials and business ventures.
“Newk is one of Australia’s greatest sportsmen and this play celebrates a remarkable period in our nation’s sporting history,” Mayor Lynes said.
The production also explores Newcombe’s time as Davis Cup Captain through to the stroke he suffered in 2003, showing how his trademark zest for life never disappears but needs to be tempered.
NEWK is recommended for audiences aged 12+.
Tickets can be booked via the City’s website at gosnells.wa.gov.au or by calling the DRPAC Box Office between 10am and 2pm Monday to Friday, on 9498 9414.
