Pedestrians using the underpass beneath Burslem Drive in Maddington will now be greeted by a vibrant new mural created by local artist Rohin Kickett.

The river-themed mural, completed last week, was funded by the City of Gosnells, Water Corporation and Maddington Central.

Mayor Terresa Lynes said the underpass provided a safer alternative to crossing busy Burslem Drive, but its previously plain concrete walls had not been very welcoming.

“This bright mural will create a more inviting walkway, connecting the commercial area of Maddington with the river side of Burslem Drive,” she said.

“The mural also connects pedestrians to the heritage and landscape of the area, providing a sense of place and belonging. Rohin’s done a great job and it looks fantastic.”

The completed mural is the first public artwork in the City of Gosnells by Mr Kickett, a Ballardong Noongar artist.

“The mural represents the river in that section of Burslem Drive, leading up to the shopping centre, where I grew up and where I played as a kid, he said.

“I just hope it brings a bit more vibrancy to the underpass and, when people walk past, it piques their curiosity and draws them in for a closer look.”
