A record number of City of Gosnells residents became Australian citizens this month, with three back-to-back ceremonies held on Monday 20 April.

More than 670 people were conferred as new citizens at Mills Park in Beckenham, pledging their commitment to Australia and its people.

Mayor Terresa Lynes said the new citizens came from 62 countries, including Mongolia, Croatia, Chile and Zambia, with India the most common country of origin.

“Each of these new citizens has put roots down in our local community and it is a privilege to share in this life-changing moment for our local residents,” she said.

“To be eligible for citizenship, a person must have been a permanent resident in Australia for at least four years. This means each of these new citizens has already been contributing to our community and economy for some time.

“By officially welcoming these new citizens, we strengthen our diverse and vibrant community and ensure it continues to thrive.”

Citizenship eligibility and assessments are managed by the Australian Government Department of Home Affairs, while local governments, including the City of Gosnells, host citizenship ceremonies for their communities.
